Immigrate to an American Boom Town
Normally one thinks of immigrants as coming in from another country to live in the USA. However, sometimes it's right for us Americans to pack our bags and head to a new city with new opportunities. A Southwestern city growing in leaps and bounds is Austin, TX. It has a huge pull with the music festival South by Southwest and Dell Inc. offers many jobs. The population is now 1.8 million. Apple is presently expanding there as well.
Another place to look into is New Orleans, Louisiana. Even though it's still recovering from Hurricane Katrina, the tourism is booming and has gained more residents than any other area in the USA. If you prefer the Eastern part of the USA, check out Washington, D.C.'s Metro Area. Here the federal government offers employment and there is also a strong tech culture. On the other hand, West Coasters should consider Portland, Oregon or Vancouver, Washington. Though unemployment is high, the population continues to rise as college age students head out for the low cost of living. Expect it to start booming as it grows in tourism.
