Work as a Textile Designer
The position of a textile designer is an interesting hybrid between artist, fashion designer and artisan. In essence, a textile designer works to create a 2D design that can be used, most likely as a repeated pattern in a design to produce knits, woven fabric, printed fabric or other textile products. A textile designer will often work both on site, in an industrial location where the production is happening or in other locations, like their own studio or in collaboration with other artists.
The most important textile design fields are interior design and fabric for clothing, however, textile designers (due to their knowledge of creating dynamic repeating patterns) may also work to design packaging, cards, dinnerware, wrapping paper and much more. Textile design allows people to work both individually, as freelance designers, or to be part of a design team. A typical work day may include: meeting with clients and industry technicians, marketing, interpreting a client's ideas, drawing up sketches and creating sample designs, assessing completed work, using specialized software like CAD and researching fashion trends.
