Nordic Cuisine

Sweden is known for their fresh spring potatoes, so good they can be served with only butter and fresh dill. However, both traditional and innovative new cuisines are putting Sweden back on the map. Today's Nordic cuisine uses traditional cooking techniques and ingredients, some of which are disappearing, reviving them with new flavors and combinations. Of course visitors should expect pristine, fresh seafood. Herring is considered the common man's fish of choice and can be found pickled, fried and prepared in various ways to be eaten on hearty dark grain bread that is traditional to Northern Europe.
Typically they come in the form of hearty rounds and packed with grains. Sweden is also known for its berries: strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, lingonberries, cherries...Of course, the quintessential Swedish dish is a Swedish meatball with a side of potatoes, tart cooked lingonberries and dark hearty bread smeared with rich butter. Some tips to save money with eating and traveling in Sweden are to dine in market stalls and smaller restaurants, plus drink Austrian, Spanish and Portuguese wines instead of expensive liquors and wines from elsewhere.
