Basic CPR 101

One never knows when having confidence in your CPR skills can come in handy. Life is unpredictable. However, even if you haven't had the possibility to take a CPR class, this is the necessary information to have a basic understanding of how to perform CPR and when it's appropriate to use it. CPR stands for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. It consists of a combination of chest compressions and rescue breathing (this is done mouth to mouth). In the case that someone isn't breathing or has no pulse, CPR can restore circulation and help to move oxygen-rich blood to the brain.
Common incidents where it's helpful to know CPR are: poisoning, suffocation, smoke inhalation, electrocution, and near-drowning. The first thing to know about CPR is it only should be used if its certain the person isn't breathing or has no pulse. It should be started as soon as possible, but always make sure there is no risk to oneself before approaching the victim. Always call for emergency assistance in the meantime. CPR consists of 3 things: compression - 30 chest compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths, airway - make sure victim's airway is open and has nothing blocking it, breathing - rescue breathing is when one breathes into the victims mouth at timed intervals. Remember, while performing CPR always check for signs of life.
