Core Labor Rights You Should Know

Ever since the recession hit and the job market has been at a depressing low, people who have been unemployed and looking for jobs have become desperate in their search for employment. Especially for people who have been without work for a while and have just recently reentered the work force, it can be easy to be taken advantage of. This can happen either because the employee, having been out of work for so long, may not know exactly what the current labor regulations are and what rights they are entitled to.
This can also happen if an employer knowingly takes advantage of an employee’s desperation to have a job; in many cases, employees are so fearful of being replaced that they never complain that their labor rights are being violated. Every American worker, however, should inform themselves as to what their rights are and stand up for the law when they are being violated. Some of the core labor rights that everyone should keep in mind include freedom of association with unions, the right to collective bargaining, freedom from forced labor, and the right to non-discriminatory employment; this means equal pay for equal work.
